Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a modern, highly effective and evidence-based treatment option in orthopaedic and rehabilitation medicine. It linically proven to provide fast and effective results when combined with a tailored exercise program.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy or Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is an innovative, cost-effective evidenced based treatment for tendon pain and an alternate treatment option for patients who suffer with chronic pain.

Shockwave Therapy is a non-surgical treatment that passes short, intense energy soundwaves, travelling faster than the speed of light, into damaged tissues to increase blood flow and stimulate an acute inflammatory response designed to accelerate the body's natural healing process.

The main benefits of Shockwave Therapy are through the breakdown

of scar tissue, helping restore normal movement and function whilst rapidly reducing pain. Shockwave Therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment modality for a range of common tendon complaints including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy and tennis elbow.

Shockwave therapy is a highly trusted safe treatment modality with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance that is clinically proven to provide fast and effective results when combined with regular exercise. NICE provides national guidance and advice to improve health and social care in both NHS and private practice.

What conditions can be treated with Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy is an effective treatment modality for a variety of conditions. Including:

  • Patellar Tendinopathy

  • Shoulder Pain

  • Tennis elbow

  • Golfers elbow

  • Bone injuries – Shin splints, stress fractures and non-union fractures

  • Calcific tendinopathy

  • Insertional achilles tendinopathy

  • Mid-portion achilles tendinopathy

  • Plantar fasciitis (Heel Pain)

  • Hamstring tendinopathy

  • Adductor tendinopathy syndrome (Groin pain)

  • Greater Trochantric Pain Syndrome (Lateral hip pain)

  • Chronic pain

  • Myofascial pain syndrome

  • Trigger finger

  • Spasticity

How does shockwave therapy work?

Shockwave Therapy uses a specialist device to deliver acoustic energy through the skin to the injured part of the body. The shockwaves are mechanical and not electric. They are audible, low-energy sound waves, which increase the blood flow to the injured area.

Shockwave therapy has two main modes of action which will help with persistent tendon pain. First the shockwaves work to desensitise nerve endings which will often give an immediate reduction in pain. Secondly, and often most importantly, the shockwaves cause controlled micro-trauma (microscopic damage) to the tissues which encourages the body to respond by increasing the blood circulation and metabolism in the affected area.  This will activate and accelerate the body’s own healing response. The shockwaves can also ‘breakdown’ disorganised tissue and calcifications.

How many sessions will I need?

All patients wishing to be treated using our Shockwave Therapy services will be required to attend an initial consultation. Your suitability for the treatment will be discussed during your initial consultation and sessions can be booked once recommended.

NICE guidelines recommend a minimum of 3 sessions with a week in between each session. In our experience, we have found most patients start to feel the benefit of their treatment after 4-6 sessions and offer discounted packages for patients wanting to book 4 or 6 consecutive weekly sessions following their initial consultation.
